The Egyptian government sets a statutory national minimum wage to increase the ability of poor people to obtain basic needs, improve their standard of living, and creates incentives to enhance their productivity. However, there are growing concerns about the potential adverse employment effects of an inappropriately set national minimum wage. The purpose of this edition of Policy Viewpoint is to provide suggestions for the formulation and effective implementation of a minimum wage policy in Egypt that promotes fairness as well as efficiency by reducing poverty and inequality while creating decent jobs.
